旋涡泵的叶轮为一等厚圆盘，在它外缘的两侧有很多径向小叶片。在与叶片相应部位的泵壳上有一等截面的环形流道，整个流道被一个隔舌分成为吸、排两方，分别与泵的吸、排管路相联。泵内液体随叶轮一起回转时产生一定的离心力，向外甩入泵壳中的环形流道，并在流道形状的限制下被迫回流，重新自叶片根部进入后面的另一叶道。因此，液体在叶片与环形流道之间的运动迹线，对静止的泵壳来说是一种前进的螺旋线；而对于转动的叶轮来说则是一种后退的螺旋线。旋涡泵即因液体的这种旋涡运动而得名。液体能连续多次进入叶片之间获取能量，直到从排出口排出。旋涡泵的工作有些像多级离心泵，但旋涡泵没有像离心泵蜗壳或导叶那样的能量转换装置。旋涡泵主要是通过多次连续作功的方式把能量传递给液体，所以能产生较高的压力。在能量传递过程中，由于液体的多次撞击，能量损失较大，泵的效率较低，一般为20～50%。旋涡泵只适用于要求小流量（1～40米3/时）、较高扬程（可达250米）的场合，如消防泵、飞机加油车上的汽油泵、小锅炉给水泵等。旋涡泵可以输送高挥发性和含有气体的液体，但不应用来输送粘度大于7帕·秒的较稠液体和含有固体颗粒的不洁净液体。旋涡泵的特点流量小，扬程高，具有自吸功能，可用来输送粘度小于5度E的无固体颗粒及其类似于水的液体。如汽油、煤油、酒精等，可用作小型蒸汽锅炉补水、化工、制药、高楼供水等用途。过流部件还有不锈钢等材质可用来输送酸、碱类有腐蚀性的液体。输送介质温度为-20~+80度。从结构可分为;单级、双级、多级；直联形式等。
工作原理
旋涡泵（也称涡流泵）是一种叶轮式泵。主要由叶轮、泵体和泵盖组成。叶轮是一个圆盘，圆周上的叶片呈放射状均匀排列。泵体和叶轮间形成环形流道，吸入口和排出口均在叶轮的外圆周处。吸入口与排出口之间有隔板，由此将吸入口和排出口隔离开。
我们将泵内的液体分为两部分：叶片间的液体和流道内的液体。当叶轮旋转时，在离心力的作用下，叶轮内液体的圆周速度大于流道内液体的圆周速度，故形成图1所示的“环形流动”。又由于自吸入口至排出口液体跟着叶轮前进，这两种运动的合成结果，就使液体产生与叶轮转向相同的“纵向旋涡”。因而得到旋涡泵之名。需要特别指出的是，液体质点在泵体流道内的圆周速度小于叶轮的圆周速度。
在纵向旋涡过程中，液体质点多次进入叶轮叶片间，通过叶轮叶片把能量传递给流道内的液体质点。液体质点每经过一次叶片，就获得一次能量。这也是相同叶轮外径情况下，旋涡泵比其它叶片泵扬程高的原因。并不是所有液体质点都通过叶轮,随着流量的增加，“环形流动”减弱。当流量为零时，“环形流动”强，扬程高。由于流道内液体是通过液体撞击而传递能量。同时也造成较大撞击损失，因此旋涡泵的效率比较低。
旋涡泵的用途
W型单级直连旋涡泵是供吸送清水或物理化学性质类似于水的液体之用，使用液温不超过60，常用于锅炉给水的配套，在造船、轻纺、化工、冶金、机械制造、水产养殖、固定消防稳压、热交换机组、农业远程喷灌等部门等都有广泛的应用。
旋涡泵体积小、重量轻的特点在船舶装置中具有极大的优越性。
具有自吸能力或借助于简单装置来实现自吸。
具有陡降的扬程特性曲线，因此，对系统中的压力波动不敏感。
某些旋涡泵可实现汽液混输。这对于抽送含有气体的易挥发的液体和汽化压力很高的高温液体具有重要的意义。
旋涡泵结构简单、铸造和加工工艺都容易实现，某些旋涡泵零件还可以使用非金属材料，如塑料、尼龙模压叶轮等。
